ASVP gives to nonprofits By Jerry Mahoney American-Statesman Staff Monday, June 5, 2000 A 1-year-old group of technology professionals known as Austin Social Venture Partners has given $115,000 to five Central Texas nonprofits. Launched by Dell Computer Corp. manager David Lunsford and other Dell professionals in April 1999, ASVP offers money and expertise to nonprofit organizations. It has grown to 60 members from several companies who pay $5,000 annually. The most recent grants include: * $30,000 to Communities in Schools, for a program to improve the math skills of at-risk students and introduce them to careers in technology. * $25,000 each to the Girl Scouts-Lone Star Council for a technology center designed to increase girls' interest in science and technology; Odyssey School, a private school for children in fourth through ninth grades with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder; and the Sustainable Food Center to help at-risk families budget for, shop for and cook healthful food. * $10,000 to The Medical Institute, which focuses on sex education, for Web site improvements. In its first round of grants, last September, ASVP gave a total of $117,000. For more information contact: communications@asvp.org |
